Petting tortoises

We saw loads of tortoises in and around Yzerfontein and the kids (especially Emma) couldn't resist taking a closer look. Joubert is a little more cautious around them as the last time he picked one up, it emptied it's bladder all over his hands :-) Emma just loves them and kept on shouting "stop, STOPPP", whenever we approached one. After the 30 millionth time we decided to develop sudden loss of hearing :-)
It was a small miracle that we didn't drive over this teeny tiny little baby - I don't think I've ever seen such a small tortoise!

When we returned from our trip to Cape L'Agulhas to our rented cottage in Arniston, we took a dirt road shortcut that ran through several farms. I just had to stop to photograph some of the hundreds and hundreds of sheep we saw. I found them hilarious to watch, and the noise! They were not impressed with our presence at all and immediately moved away from the fence, complaining loudly, when we got out of the car. But curiousity soon got the better of them and they wathed me intently (all the while carrying on at the tops of their voices) while I snapped away.

Photohunt #131: Lazy

Found this little guy at the Queens Park Zoo in East London when I was visiting my parents earlier this year. He was lounging in the winter sun and couldn't even bother to get up for a closer look like all his friends. I suppose he must be the lazy one of the bunch (either that, or the male chauvinist, LOL!).

It's Monday and I'm feeling wild!

As I mentioned yesterday, we spent the weekend at Lindani game farm in the Limpopo province. The farm is well stocked with a large variety of animals and many of them are not shy at all! We took a daily walk around the farm, while the children tore down the dirt roads on their bicycles. Even though I have lived in Africa all my life and have had countless opportunities to view game, I still find it awe inspiring to be able to actually walk in the veld together with these wild animals. It really is such a privilege.

These little warthogs were very curious and could not stop themselves from coming closer for a look at the new guests. They were slightly nervous at first, but by the second day I was the nervous one as they were coming so close!

These giraffes also watched us with great interest as we walked by, but quickly moved farther away when we came too close.

I don't really feel like talking about it, but suffice to say that all the images I meticulously captured for Today's Flowers post, I now find infinitely boring and ever so predictable. Then I came across this wonderful contest and proceeded to stuff that up royally as well. So now I'm posting a photo that I actually really like very much, but which is not all that original. The wonderful Ann posted two brilliant primate shots in similar fashion a week or so ago - please go check it out.

Hehe, one of these images looks like the real thing while the other does not! The truth is that I'm definitely not brave enough to get this close to the real thing - that would be WILD! Both of these are sculptures I found at the nursery today - the first one is very life-like, wouldn't you agree?

I have to confess that these aren't really my best photos of the week, but they are ones that I have not posted yet, so here goes.
